For several hundred years there have been cruel scams aimed at those wishing to go to “America.” Below is one of the latest: a phishing email that’s intended to steal identity information from those seeking to immigrate.

Not only does it distort the real reason for the U.S. State Department’s Diversity Visa Program, but it tells the potential victim that they have won $100,000 as well.

The scam:

Congratulations!!!

You are among those randomly selected and registered for further consideration in the (DV) DIVERSITY IMMIGRANT PROGRAM for the fiscal Year 2010. This official U.S. government program aims to diversify the United States population by creating an immigration opportunity for under-represented groups. Your visa winning/case numbers identity is 2010AF00J051PXXX and the serial net visa passport attached to your case number is SNVPh700IU. Your visa type permits you to travel with your family and Your visa duration is 10 years multiple entry to the United States. It is renewable upon expiration and it permits you to work, study and own properties in the United States.

Your selection as a winner entitles you to $100,000 (One Hundred Thousand Dollars) which will be made available to you upon your arrival in the United States. The visa gives you an opportunity to apply for and acquire a United States of America citizenship green card while residing in the United States of America.

The real Diversity Immigrant Visa Program

The U.S. State Department has a page describing the Diversity Immigrant Visa Program here. It includes:

“Overview

“The Congresionally mandated Diversity Immigrant Visa Program makes available 50,000 diversity visas (DV) annually, drawn from random selection among all entries to persons who meet strict eligibility requirements from countries with low rates of immigration to the United States.

“Fraud Warning

“Please Note: There have been instances of fraudulent websites posing as official U.S. Government sites. Some companies posing as the U.S. Government have sought money in order to “complete” lottery entry forms. There is no charge to download and complete the Electronic Diversity Visa Entry Form. The Department of State notifies successful Diversity Visa applicants by letter, and NOT by e-mail. To learn more see the Department of State Warning and the Federal Trade Commission Warning.”

No streets of gold. No $100,000.

Thanks Marco.
